Wellbeing at RCHK is attended to both within the classroom and the curriculum and beyond it. For further information about our approach to Wellbeing throughout the college, please see our school webiste. This page addresses the learning and teaching that is planned for in and beyond the classroom.
Our Personal, Social and Physical Education (PSPE) and Relationships and Sexuality Education (RSE) learning at RCHK is largely part of the Who We Are Unit of Inquiry, which is taught in every year level. The PSPE overview, the ESF RSE Scope and Sequence and information about our Who We Are Unit of Inquiry for each year level can be found on this page.
PSPE, RSE and Wellbeing are also addressed across the Programme of Inquiry, during PE lessons and as they arise in school.
Personal, social and physical education is an important part of a student's learning in the Primary Years Programme (PYP). It connects closely with the IB learner profile, which describes the qualities we want our students to develop as caring, confident and internationally minded lifelong learners.
In the PYP, personal, social and physical education helps children grow in every way — supporting their wellbeing, health and overall development. It builds their confidence, skills and understanding, and encourages them to enjoy active, healthy lives both inside and outside the classroom.
At RCHK, Personal, social and physical education includes five strands: identity, interactions, wellness, rights and responsibilities, and movement. The PSPE continuum was developed by drawing on a number of different documents and best practices from around the world, including documents from the IB and Unesco.
The continuum is presented in Phases from 1-4 for the Primary school, covering all aspects of personal and social development. As a continuum of learning, it is expected that students will progress through it at a rate appropriate to their own levels of understanding. The curriculum is cyclical in nature and therefore some aspects of it are taught in more than one year group, often developing in complexity as the students progress. The full continuum can be seen on the curriculum website.
As part of our ongoing commitment to wellbeing and student development, part of our Who We Are unit includes learning and teaching about relationships and sexuality in every year group of RCHK.
The learning is developmental, and covers four aspects for Primary students:
Relationships
Gender, Values and Sexuality
Staying Safe: Skills for Health and Wellbeing
The Human Body and Development
These aspects of the curriculum are covered throughout the year, and as they come up for students. Teachers will inform parents/ guardians before they begin planned sessions to teach aspects of the curriculum to do with staying safe, parts of the body and human development.
